Dr Abhijit Pal is a medical oncologist who works as a staff specialist at Liverpool Hospital and Bankstown Hospital (South Western Sydney Local Health District) and specialises in Phase 1 cancer trials and thoracic malignancies. He completed a Phase 1 trials fellowship at the Drug Development Unit, Royal Marsden Hospital in London from 2019 – 2020. He was awarded a PhD in 2024 through the University of Sydney (supervised by Professor Frances Boyle), looking at informed consent for Phase 1 trials and ways to improve the representation of patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds on to cancer clinical trials. He is Principal Investigator for multiple Phase 1 trials and Phase 3 thoracic cancer trials at Liverpool Hospital.
Dr Pal has specific expertise in working with priority populations and improving research participation in these communities. He has completed clinician and healthcare consumer co-design workshops with the Arabic speaking community in South West Sydney and is lead investigator on an approved ethics protocol to pilot the use of an Arabic bilingual trial navigator in Bankstown and Liverpool Hospital. He has spoken on ABC radio and at multiple national conferences including COSA, MOGA and multiple cooperative trial groups including ANZUP, AGITIG and ANZGOG about strategies to improve equity in clinical trials.
